[China Network] Changsha of Hunan Province: Foreign Students Make Rice Dumplings to Meet Dragon-boat Festival and Feel the Charm of Chinese Traditional Culture

[ChinaNetwork] News on Jun. 15 “Just like this, make a circle, put rice and stuffing, prick them tightly by a chopstick, then, wrap up and bind them.” The foreign students who came from Hunan University of Commerce made rice dumplings to meet Dragon-boat Festival with residents of Changhua Community, Yuelu District, Changsha City, Hunan Province in the morning of Jun. 15.

This activity was sponsored by Youth League Committee of Hunan University of Commerce and Wangchengpo Street Civilization Office and undertaken by Changhua Community Neighborhood Committee of Wangchengpo Street. During this activity, more than 40 volunteers who came from Hunan University of Commerce and foreign students (Yemen,Nigeria,Ghanaand other countries) were present.

The community residents started to prepare the related food stuff at 7:30a.m, such as, wash the fresh bamboo leaves for standby application, carry out the soused sticky rice in advance, make meat stuffing and candied date, place desks and chairs in place to wait for these special learners. Soon after, the foreign students queued up to learn from the experienced aunts and grandmothers under the guidance of volunteers.

In consideration of different culture with foreign students, the volunteers, teachers and community residents separated the meat stuffing and candied date stuffing into two piles at the beginning of activity.

At the other end of long desk, one aunt taught Maany to make rice dumplings. However, he was wilder about taking pictures compared with learning and felt pitiful for that because he put the bamboo leaves aside on halfway without finished product. But, he photographed the whole process of rice dumplings production in hands of residents by his mobile phone. He said that he liked to experience all holidays and activities ofChina; moreover, he was striving to learn and communicate with others in Chinese.

A foreign student named by “Huang Jia” and came fromSyriamade two rice dumplings successfully under the guidance of an aunt. She said that she was interested in the culture and beautiful Juzizhou Park of Changsha within three and half month inChina. Now, her motherland was celebrating the bustle Lesser Bairam, just likeChina. She was deeply attracted by Chinese activity and happy to join in it.

“Qiong” who came fromGhanaalways made rice dumplings seriously. He strung the rice dumplings together and gave them to friends around him. When he was asked about the story behind Dragon-boat Festival, he said that he liked Chinese culture more when his Chinese teacher talked about the story of Qu Yuan one year ago.

The Grandmother Tang was one of “teachers” of foreign students in this community. She said that these foreign students got down to the rice dumplings and learned quickly though some rice drop from bamboo leaves. It is observed that they loved this activity from their hearts.

As an activity during Chinese traditional festival, Dragon-boat Festival, the rice dumplings making can convey the cultural connotation of traditional Dragon-boat Festival. When students who came from different countries got together to feel the festival atmosphere in advance, they could inject the international elements in Dragon-boat Festival culture and feel the happiness of festival during tasting the rice dumplings.

It is known that Hunan University of Commerce has signed district-school co-construction agreement with Changhua Community for more than 10 years. This activity titled by “Bamboo Leaves Fragrance and Community Filled with Love” is carried out on the basis of that. The whole activity considers regional co-construction and folk culture as main line and carrier respectively with the purpose of making more people know Chinese traditional festival, especially driving foreign students to feel the traditional folk custom and respect for elders in practice, appreciate the in-depth connotation and charm of traditional folk culture, strengthen the recognition of cultural identity and inherit the traditional culture unconsciously, in such case, they will advocate the traditional virtue and promote the further development of district-school co-construction.
