Rednet.cn news on March 9 (Correspondent: Xiao Libing, Chao Jinwen, Kiche News Reporter: Liu Yibin) “usually I have to work hard, I haven’t received much education, and I would be very happy if you can come to teach my daughter,” said the 46-year-old sanitation workers Cai Guifen to the volunteers of HNUC who came to Changhua Community, Yuelu District, Changsha on March 8.

On that day, in the event "Lei Feng spirit enters into the campus" jointly held by Changsha Municipal Civilization Office and the Wangchengpo Street Office of Yuelu District, the service stations set on the square by HNUC volunteers were particularly noticeable. A lot of people were walking there, some of which came for help. In unified red vest, with smile on their faces, the young volunteers provided service to these residents. Divided into three groups, these volunteers from HNUC provided services respectively, including electrical appliance maintenance, legal advice, and free one-to-one family education. Among them, one-to-one family education was extremely sought after. About 20 parents registered within less than a half day, wishing their children could get the help of university students.

Cai Guifen, who comes from Anhui and now lives in the rented apartment of Changhua Community, has to work from  5:00am to 5:00pm. When she comes back home, she is so tired that she cannot help her daughter with her homework. On the site, Cai Guifen held the volunteer’s hand and said, her 11-year-old daughter was in Grade Five now, but due to bad study habits, she performed not so good at school, especially in mathematics and English. She hoped that volunteers from HNUC could help them.

Since the establishment of community-school cooperative relationship between HNUC and Changhua Community in 2007, HNUC carried out many couplet assistance activities, offering care and help to children of migrant workers. Among them, “one-to-one family education” has become a regular event in each week. So far, a grand total of 270 volunteers have served 68 children of migrant workers, with the service time up to 200 hours in total, and got much praise from the residents there.

Ms. Zhang who came for registration revealed that since her son participated in the “one-to-one family education” initiative organized by young volunteers last September, his performance in study and also temper were improved. Ms. Zhang said with smile on her face that influenced by the volunteers, her son won the gold prize in the national integrity essay contest and became more kind-hearted, as he would give up his seat on bus to others in need.

The deputy secretary of HNUC’s Youth League Committee Zeng Jing introduced that our school had established cooperative relationship with several communities around to continuously carry out community service activities, so as to make the initiative of “learning from Leifeng” a long term and normal one.

In 2017, besides continuously providing “one-to-one family education” service to Changhua Community, HNUC will also organize some public welfare activities with Baigezui Community such as “painting a wonderful fairy tale world with your skillful hands” and “striving to be a environmentally friendly green giant—the Hulk”, cooperate with Yangming Villa of Meixihu Street Office to conduct activities such as “Quanquan Story” and “Weekend Cinema”, and go to the nursing homes, special schools, and assistance center for special children to provide some volunteer services.
