In her hometown, Xiao is regarded as a moral model who has been taking care of a widow of a Chinese Expeditionary Force solder for over one decade; in the eyes of her fellow soldiers, she is a hard-working heroine; in the university, she is a student with good qualities and academic performance, and is selected as one of the 100 Excellent Student Party Members; she is an aspirational, kind-hearted and honest student of HNUC.

I. Taking care of a soldier’s widow for eighteen years

It is a moving story of a female college student, who was born in the 1990s, taking care of an old woman, who is over 100 years old. Xiao Xia is kindly called by Jiang Dongjiao as “little girl”, and Jiang is called by Xiao as “grandma”. Over more than a decade, the “little girl” has been taking good care of her “grandma”, and they have developed a deeper relationship than any blood lineage.

When she was a pupil, Xiao Xia, a left-behind child, lived in her grandma’s. She found that Jiang Dongjiao, who was living in the same neighborhood, is a valetudinarian with severe stoop. The thoughtful girl decided to take care of Jiang, and helped her with chores after school every day. A few years later, Jiang lost her sight and couldn’t take care of herself. Xiao Xia frequently went to Jiang’s, and helped her comb, fetch water and do the laundry and the cleaning. Everyone in the neighborhood was impressed by the little girl who took care of the sick widow.

During studies in the middle school and university, she visited Jiang occasionally. Xiao Xia’s middle school was more than 60km from the hometown, so she had to live in the school. However, she still visited Jiang during winter and summer holidays. When studying in the university about hundreds of kilometers from the hometown, she still cares for Jiang: she frequently bought Jiang daily necessities; she often brought cakes and soft food to Jiang who had trouble in eating; sometimes, she brought her some local specialties from Changsha; she even provided Jiang with financial aids which were saved from her living expenses. Jiang was deeply moved by what Xiao did.

After joining the army, Xiao appropriated 200 yuan from her allowance every month and sent it to Jiang. This lasted 36 months, and she remitted a total of 7200 yuan, which represents Xiao’s kind feeling towards Jiang.

In January 2015, she used her retirement compensation to hold a banquet in the celebration of Jiang’s 100th birthday, and invited all those above 60 years old in the village to participate in the celebration. Inspired by Xiao’s philanthropic act, all the villagers respect the lonely widow. When many people admired her act, she said, “I take care of the grandma only because she has no families and needs help.”

II. Generously supporting schoolmates and children living in mountainous areas

At the beginning of 2013, she appropriated 12,000 yuan from her compensation granted by university for her joining the army, and entrusted He Mingbin, the monitor of her class, and the instructor to finance 4 poor students in her class and another 2 students in other classes. In June 2014, those students, who found jobs, called Xiao to express their gratitude, and proposed to make pay back twice what they received in the first place. Xiao replied with a smile, “You can compensate me by helping other poor students.” She also used the bonus of 5,000 yuan from the “Alibaba Daily Positive Energy” award to finance children in the mountainous areas. This is just one instance of her philanthropic donations.

III. Conveying positive energy and being part of the Team of Respect and Love in HNUC

The more Xiao and other  members of her CPC branch did, the more widespread their influence became. The members of other CPC branches, student leaders, the Young Volunteers Association and the love foundation group have joined Xiao, and created the Xiao Xia Team of Respect and Love. Over more than one year since its establishment, more than 2,300 volunteers have participated in activities organized by the team. The team was successfully selected as the “China Soong Ching Ling Foundation · Starbucks Young Leadership Program”, and received the 2016 “Lotus Student · Charity Award” from the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League of China.
