Changsha, May 5th (People. com, reporter: Kuang Ying) -- On April 30th, a group of people used a rope and clothes to rescue victims at the Orange Island in Changsha, which moved local citizens.

At around 6 p.m. on April 30th, some tourists on the Orange Island, Changsha, Hunan, shouted “Help, Help…” as they saw a father jumping into the river to save his daughter who accidentally fell into the water.

Xu Shoubao, a senior student of HNUC, was playing with his schoolmates, and didn’t hesitate to follow the shout to the scene. He recalled, “I saw the father trying to lift his daughter up. However, he seemed to exert his last effort and failed to lift her up, so he had to wait for the helping hands.”

At this critical moment, Xu Shoubao took a bamboo pole from a citizen and quickly threw it into the water for the father to hold on to. He said, “I was a little relieved when I saw both of them catching the pole, and it gave us more time to save them.” He grabbed the pole while other students pulled him to prevent him from falling off. He explained, “Maybe it is because I am tall.”

Many people soon rushed to the scene: some called the police; some shouted for help; and some encouraged the victims to hold on.

As the bamboo pole cracked, an old woman came up with an idea of asking people to make a rope with their clothes. Xu Shoubao quickly took off his denim jacket, and many citizen followed suit. They turned the clothes into a rope and threw it into the water.

At that time, the two victims were very weak: the girl was pale and unconscious; the father held onto the rope as the last hope, and tried to climb up with his daughter, but he was so weak and worried that all he could do was to hold onto the rope as long as possible.

About 5 minutes later, Zhou Kaixuan and his workmates made it to the scene, shouting “Move! Here are rescue tools.” Zhou Kaixuan is an urban management officer who was patrolling with three others on the Orange Island. Hearing someone calling for help, they soon ran to the scene. Ge Mingliang and another officer stayed there to keep the order and prevent others from falling into the water, while Zhou Kaixuan and the other officer fetched tools from the administration office nearby.

After the father tied the professional rescue rope to his daughter’s waist, Xu Shoubao and Zhou Kaixuan started to pull the rope. When the girl was about half a meter from the guardrail, Xu Shoubao extended his arms and took the girl out of the water. Then the rescue team managed to take the father out of the water. The victims were well attended and remained in good conditions until an ambulance came and took them away.

Xu Shoubao said, “I was supposed to participate in the dissertation defense prior to graduation. I just ran into the incident. If another similar event occurs, I will not hesitate to rescue those in need. I also saw many citizens and tourists joining us in the rescue. They reminded me of that selfless and modest hero Lei Feng!” Xu Shoubao is soon about to work in his hometown Suqian, Jiangsu and he will remember Changsha for the kindness of local citizens.
