The 3rd Postgraduate Debate Competition Successfully Concluded

HNUC’s 3rd Postgraduate Debate Competition was successfully concluded in Classroom 104, Lingnan Campus, on April 11th.

This competition consists of three phases, i.e. preliminary contests, semifinals and final. The preliminary contests were held on March 26th, with 8 teams debating around four topics: “Is the strictest law enforcement capable of reducing traffic violations?”, “Is Wechat’s red envelope function able to bring people closer to each other?”, “Which is the key to solving the dilemma people are facing when they cannot decide on whether they should help old people who fall on the ground or not? Is it legislation or moral means?” and “Which is more important to Chinese universities, mandarin education or English education?” After fierce competition, the team A from the School of Economics & Trade, the team from the School of Laws & Public Administration, as well as teams A and B from the School of Accounting proceeded to the semifinals.

On April 6th, the semifinals were held. In the first match, the team A from the School of Accounting and the team A from the School of Economics & Trade debated fiercely on the topic of “Is the Internet Celebrity Economy a future trend or a flash in the pan”, inspiring the audience to reflect on the phenomenon. The second match was the battle between the team from the School of Laws & Public Administration and the team B from the School of Accounting. They presented an informative and inspiring debate around the topic of “Does a real-name registration system for microblog do more good than harm or vice versa”. After the evaluation by the judging panel, the team B from the School of Accounting and the team A from the School of Economics & Trade entered the final.

The final match began at 3 p.m. April 11th, with the judging panel being made up of Yin Bibo, the assistant dean of Graduate School, Ren Zhi, the director of Graduate Affairs Office and Jiang Hanfu, the advisor to this debate competition. Both teams were well-prepared and informed around the topic of “Which is the more reasonable approach for our nation to realizing the great rejuvenation? Hiding our capacities and binding our time or being more proactive?”, and the audience was impressed by their excellent performance. After the competition, Jiang Hanfu made comments, and spoke highly of debaters’ speculative spirit, learning capacities and competitive attitude. Moreover, she analyzed the debate topic and shared some debating skills, such as keeping to the topic and elevating the theoretical connotation.

Finally, the team B from the School of Accounting was awarded the winner of this debate contest, with the team A from the School of Economics & Trade ranking the second place, and the team A from the School of Accounting and the team from the School of Laws & Public Administration both ranking the third place.
