On the afternoon of May 4th, the Young Volunteers Association of HNUC attended a symposium organized by Changhua Community. The symposium of “Love for Star City and Celebrate Civilization” started with Xu Shoubao, an HNUC student, telling his story of rescuing a man and his daughter together with 5 other students on the Orange Island. He said it was his duty to help and save needy people, and such behavior would enable the society to believe in youths’ ability to make contributes, he said. This is Xu’s good quality which is worth drawing from.

Following his speech, a student representing HNUC summed up Xu’s story and expressed his admiration and respect for Xu.

During the symposium, which was designed for community-university development, students representing Central South University, Hunan University and Hunan Normal University also shared their experience on providing voluntary services for such development. Subdistrict and community leaders also shared their views on respective community’s work. .For instance, the voluntary services, such as supporting education and charity performance, provided by the team of cultural volunteers led by assistant professor Guo Beibei from Central South University, who was also elected as the Hunan Provincial Outstanding Volunteer, have been extended beyond urban communities to rural areas and factories. This team brought music, dance and public donations to the left-behind children in mountainous areas, leading them to the world of love and art. As Guo said, voluntary services can meet the material and spiritual needs of the needy.

All participants agreed that building a “social university” of positive energy outside university campuses not only provides an opportunity for college teachers and students to cultivate their morality, but also can serve regional development with good moral impetus, achieving benign interaction in moral education between universities and society. “Providing voluntary services for community-university development can help colleges nurture their students’ morality through practice, and to wind people’s trust, we need to provide more professional and practical voluntary services, such as one-to-one home tutoring, legal assistance and repair home appliances for the old, Zeng Jing, the deputy secretary of Youth League Committee of HNUC, said.
Following Zeng’s speech, Sun Mei, a representative of social organizations, shared their experience on community-university development. The speech from Changhua community’s representative involved many voluntary practices such as hairdressing for the old, teaching kids English and handcraft, which embodied the spirit of volunteerism. The symposium was concluded with the community leader of Wangchengpo subdistrict delivering a speech. In his speech, Guo Runkui, the deputy secretary of Changsha Municipal Propaganda Department and the director of Civilization Office, expected us to care for the society, be righteous and courageous, be ready to assume due responsibilities and be adaptable to changing circumstances. This symposium was covered by rednet.cn and changsha.cn.
