The 7th China Education Robot Final Competition Held in Our University

On November 4 to 5, “talents gather in Xiangjiang River and technology creates the future” the 7th China Education Robot Competition was held in our university. This competition was sponsored by the China Artificial Intelligence Society, Hunan Provincial Education Department and Hunan Xiangjiang New District, organized by Hunan University of Commerce, School of Robot of Hunan University and Changsha Municipal Education Bureau, etc., assisted by Intelligent Robot Professional Committee of China Artificial Intelligence Society, Songshan Lake International Robot Industry Base and so on. More than 1300 students from over 100 universities in the country participated in the competition.

On the morning of November 4, the opening ceremony was formally started with the robot dance performance. Huang Xinhan, director of Intelligent Robot Professional Committee of China Artificial Intelligence Society and professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Li Shaopeng, member of the Party and Industry Committee of Hunan Xiangjiang New District and vice director of Management Committee, and Liu Guoquan, vice president of Hunan University of Commerce, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Huang Xinhan, director of Intelligent Robot Professional Committee of China Artificial Intelligence Society and professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, expressed a warm welcome to competitors and guidance teachers on behalf of Intelligent Robot Professional Committee of China Artificial Intelligence Society. He said the education robot competition was technically challenging and had a strong entertainment appreciation; thus it was a perfect combination of education, research and entertainment; this robot competition was improved significantly compared with the previous six competitions.

Liu Guoquan, vice president of our university, expressed his sincere gratitude to all the people concerned about the development of our university in his speech, and then introduced the development of our university in recent years, and said that the university was rich soil to cultivate market awareness and innovation spirit. Our university will adhere to the school motto, insist in the cultivation of application-oriented high-level talents and contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship. He wished the success of the competition and hoped that the competitors would show their styles and levels in the competition and get good grades.

Li Shaopeng, a member of Party and Industry Committee of Hunan Xiangjiang New District and vice director of Management Committee, said in his speech that Xiangjiang New District was striving to build the University Science and Technology City into a nationwide leading scientific and technological achievements transformation and high-end talents gathering place. He said that the holding of the education robot competition in the new district was a practical way to implement the strategy of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China “Innovation Leading and Open Development”, which is of great significance to giving full play of the advantages of scientific education and talents of the university town of Yuelu District, and to promoting the development of artificial intelligence.

Following the swearing-in of the student representative and the chief referee, Huang Xinhan, chairman of the competition, announced that China Education Robot Final Competition officially started.

This competition was divided into undergraduate group, higher vocational college group, secondary middle school group and primary school group with total 22 competitive events, of which, there were 306 undergraduate groups, 18 higher vocational college groups, 49 secondary middle school groups and 33 primary school groups. There were four competition projects, such as reflections of passion, challenge competition, small logistics robot system, group robot cooperation or dance. Each major project will not only sufficiently test the competitors’ understanding of the educational robot technology, but also test the competitors’ ability to assemble the robot, the on-the-court ability, and the teamwork ability. The drone racing was added in the competition, so the scope was wider, and its appeal and social effects were constantly being enhanced.

Our university sent a total of 4 teams to participate in the competition; finally, Maojin Travelling club obtained the special prize in the drone racing. The Intelligent Science and Technology Club of Hunan University of Commerce won the first prize of this event, and the Light Team of Hunan University of Commerce was awarded the first prize of the robot creative design and production project.

After two days of fierce competition, China Education Robot Final Competition ended on November 5. At the closing ceremony, Hou Yuanbin, professor of Xi’an University of Science and Technology, made a closing statement. She summed up several characteristics of the current education robot competition: firstly, there were more and more participants; secondly, the creative ideas were clearer; the elements of intelligent perception and information fusion were included in their creative design; thirdly, the level was higher and higher, and the intelligent perception and intelligent control were applied to the design and manufacture of the robot. In the end, she looked forward to the good prospect of China Educational Robot Competition and proposed good wishes.

Finally, Qin Zhiqiang, the founder of China Education Robot Competition and member of Songshan Lake International Robot Research Institute, announced the seventh China Education Robot Competition was officially closed. It was reported that China Education Robot Competition aims to advocate the teaching model of the integration of competition, study, research and creation of education robots, promote the popularization and implementation of the innovative practical education of the robot-aided engineering, use the education robot platform to test the mutual promotion effects of the multi-element knowledge integration and practical hands-on ability of the students, advance the education innovation, display the achievements of independent innovation, carry forward the innovation and entrepreneurship culture, and provide a solid foundation for the cultivation of more innovative talents.
